Image consultant Wendy Lee says women know men through body language and that it took only 15 minutes to read someone.
"Image encompasses things like your values, skills and flare but 55 per cent of it is based on first impressions," says Wendy from Chapter One Asia. "You may have a chance to make a second impression, but how often does that happen? Girls go by their gut feeling and that's usually not wrong. They can tell if you're a good or bad person during the first meeting. Being too boastful is a major turnoff but being too shy is not going to help you score with women either."
Wendy says generally Malaysian men are sloppy. If they put in just a little bit of effort, they'll stand out from the rest.
"A well-dressed man knows how to put everything together. It just takes a little bit of time to make yourself look better. But some people just don't know how to dress with style. While your girlfriend is shopping in a mall, why not look around at men's clothing stores? Look at how they display clothes and try to copy styles. After a while it will come naturally. For instance, you should not mix casual with elegant, unless you really know what you are doing. As far as ties go, there are about eigiht types of collars widely used here. Spend a little time learning how to tie your knots according to the collar. Your knot has to be balanced."
But all the clothes in the world are not gling to help, unless you wash, dry and iron them well. Men who wear muggy clothes, Wendy says, are a major turn off.
"Women will assume a man who has smelly clothes will have bad breath. If a man can't take care of his shirt, how is he going to take care of himself? Don't think a sloppily ironed shirt is going to go unnoticed."
She says when it comes to razors, many men grab the cheapest one on the shelf.
"Men who are concerned about their image will invest in a good product instead of a RM2 disposable razor. They risk losing their 'face value'.
"Younger men are willing to spend a bit more money on cleaning up. Most beauty product companies are targeting them. But it's harder to change the older generation."
When it comes to facial hair, Wendy says, many men get it completely wrong.
"As a rule of thumb, a moustache has to be groomed to see the upper lip. Glide the comb through your facial hair and whatever sticks out has to be cut."
When it comes to looks, she says, the more you try to cover, the more people will want to see what you are hiding.
"Be it uneven eyebrows or a funny lip. Work with what you have, don't make it worse. For those who are balding, comb-overs are a big 'no-no'.
"And as a rule of thumb, sideburns should be above or half the length of your ear. Curly sideburns are disgusting, get rid of it."
Wendy says these principles of attractiveness are a proven fact, even at work.
"A study done in the United States followed the lives of 700 graduates. After 10 years, results showed that the better looking graduates had higher paying jobs and got more promotions.
"But it's not all about looks. Human beings are not dumb. They know a superficial package when they see one. People don't want an empty shell. Men have to have confidence and a sense of humour. It's the whole package. Change your outfit and you will change your personality."
